BioInnovation Institute in Akron
The BioInnovation Institute in Akron was recently launched to capitalize on the Akron region's deep capabilities in advanced materials and medicine. The Institute's ambition is to become the leading center for biomaterials research, translation, and care by 2013. To that end, the Institute has pooled resources from five research and clinical instituionsAkron Children's Hospital, Akron General Health System, Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy, Summa Health System and The University of Akron. In addition, it has attracted $80 million to attract additional researchers and companies into the Institute. The initiative's primary supporters include The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the State of Ohio, and FirstEnergy.
